Dedication ceremony for Darleene Kaniho for her new home in Papkolea.
Darleene’s Story
There is a hill in Papakōlea that holds the of Darleene’s life. When she was just a little girl, her family moved there into a new house made possible through Hawaiian Home Lands. They built a retaining wall around the yard and planted plumeria and avocado trees. Her father, a member of the Royal Hawaiian Band and her mother, Ida Naone, the renowned Hula dancer and teacher created a home filled with music, dance, and love. The Naone became strong members of the Papakōlea community. They planted roots as deep as the roots of the trees in their front yard.
Current Projects
As a single, working mother of three, Beverly Gagnon has fought long and hard to become a homeowner. She dreamed of providing her children a permanent, affordable place to live. In 2012 she was granted a land lease from the Department of Hawaiian Homelands and immediately contacted Honolulu Habitat for Humanity (HHH) to apply.
Once her application was approved by the HHH board, Bev immediately signed up to perform her preliminary 50 hours of sweat equity. The groundbreaking took place in June and the team at Discount Windows and Doors had the opportunity to meet Beverly and her parents while participating in a work day in October. We happily anticipate the upcoming dedication ceremony and are honored to be part of the this incredible partnership with HHH.
