Tax credits will effectively reduce the cost of your windows and doors provided they meet the qualifying efficiency requirements as specified in the Economic Stimulus Plan .

What other qualifications exist?
The products must be purchased for and installed in the taxpayer’s principal residence. For record-keeping, save your receipts, Manufacturer Certificates, and ENERGY STAR labels from your windows. Improvements made in current year will be claimed on your current year taxes (filed by April 15, of the next year).  The tax credit is NOT applicable for windows, doors, insulation or roofing if you are building a new home.

Here’s how to qualify for the tax credit:

  • Windows and doors must meet a 0.30 U-factor and 0.30 SHGC or better.
  • The credit applies to the cost of the product only and does not include installation costs.
  • Qualifying windows or doors must be installed within each calendar year.

Exterior Windows and Skylights U factor <= 0.30 

SHGC <= 0.30

Not all ENERGY STAR labeled windows and skylights qualify for tax credit.

Storm Windows Meets IECC1 in combination with the exterior window over which it is installed, for the applicable climate zone Manufacturer Certification Statement3 will list classes of exterior window (single pane, clear glass, double pane, low-E coating, etc.)4 that a product may be combined with to be eligible in specific climate zones.

Not all ENERGY STAR doors will qualify.
